Certification

To become certified in CPR, BLS, or AED, participants typically complete the following steps:

  1. Register for an approved course that meets your personal, workplace, or licensing requirements.

  2. Attend the training, either in person or through a blended learning format (online coursework followed by an in-person skills session, if offered).

  3. Complete all required hands-on skills assessments, demonstrating proficiency in CPR, AED use, and other required life-saving techniques.

  4. Pass the course evaluation, which may include a written knowledge assessment and practical skills testing, depending on the certification program.

  5. Receive your certification card, which is typically valid for two years. Renewal is required before the certification expires to maintain current credentials.

Certification is available for individuals with no prior experience as well as healthcare professionals seeking initial certification or renewal. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a nationally recognized certification that meets applicable training standards for their profession or organization.

Why Certification Is Important

Certification provides the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence needed to respond effectively during life-threatening emergencies. Proper training ensures individuals can recognize cardiac arrest, choking, and other medical emergencies, administer CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and provide immediate care until emergency medical services arrive.

For many healthcare professionals, educators, childcare providers, coaches, and workplace employees, CPR and BLS certification is a requirement for employment or professional licensure. Maintaining a current certification demonstrates a commitment to safety, preparedness, and high-quality emergency care.

Beyond meeting professional requirements, certification empowers individuals to act quickly and confidently in critical situations, increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome when every second counts.
